Under the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015, English and Welsh universities have counter-terrorism and security duties. Specifically, universities ‘must, in the exercise of their functions, have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.’ The Secretary of State may issue guidance to universities about the exercise of this new duty, and may require universities to provide information on how they are discharging the duty.
We are a group of academics who believe the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act jeopardises the relationship of trust between educators and students. This poster has been designed to be used by staff working in higher education institutions in England and Wales to demonstrate our refusal to spy on our students. Put it on your door or in your office!
